ANZAC Day
The 25th April is of special military significance in both Australia and Italy – for very different reasons.

Luigi Cocilovo (far right) was in the Italian army during WWII. He was captured in Tobruk but made it home safety after the war. In Australia, the 25th April is known as ANZAC Day, and represents the military battle from WWI in Gallipoli, Turkey where thousands of Australian and New Zealand Army troops lost their lives as they landed on the beaches at Gallopoli, the Turkish troops had them completely outnumbered. Despite these odds, the ANZACs held their ground for months. What had been planned as a way to knock Turkey out of the war quickly became a stalemate, and the campaign dragged on for eight months. At the end of 1915 the ANZACs were evacuated, and both sides suffered heavy casualties. Over 8,000 Australian soldiers had been killed. ANZAC stands for the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.
In Italy the date marks the fall of Mussolini’s Italian Social Republic and the end of the Nazi occupation in Italy in 1945, towards the end of the second World War. It is known as Liberation Day.
