Pietro Cocilovo’s wife, Rita Battaglia was one of six children. She was born in Seminara, Calabria on the 28th May 1944. Rita arrived in Sydney, Australia on December 11th 1963. She travelled on the ship,’Marconi’ and stayed with her sister Maria who then lived in Granville.
Rita met Pietro in 1965 after they were introduced by family and friends and were married two months later on July 10th 1965 at St Francis Church in Surry Hills. The reception was held at Bluebird Reception Centre in Stanmore. They travelled first class on the South Aurora and spent a week on their honeymoon in Melbourne. They stayed at the Carlton Hotel.
In January 1965 Rita started work as a dressmaker in Burwood, sewing school uniforms, the company closed after 1 year. She then worked in Croydon for 2.5 years for Mr Smith, making dresses that were to be sold in DJs and Target, and then spent 3.5 years working from home.
